Make Time to Play: May

This year, we’re celebrating play at the library! Everyone knows how beneficial play is for kids, but did you know that it is equally important for adults? It can be a wonderful stress reliever, boosts creativity, alleviates boredom, and may even lower your blood pressure. To that end, every month in 2024, we’re highlighting a different form of play. Each month we’ll have a bingo-style fun card. If you complete all the activities for a blackout on your card, you’ll receive a special prize. The more of the 12 monthly fun cards you complete this year, the better chance you have to win the grand prize and be crowned our annual play champion!

For May, we’re celebrating all things play-acting. Beyond just being a lot of fun, acting can improve confidence, as well as public speaking, listening, memorization, and teamwork skills.

Did you know that the tradition of theater dates back to ancient Greece? The ancient Greeks wrote and performed both tragic and comic plays.

Did you know improv theater–where performers spontaneously create their material as they act–is rooted in early 20th century acting training exercises?

Did you know Method acting theory is based on the work of Konstantin Stanislavski? It encourages actors to identify with their characters. You may or may not want to go full method for some of the tasks on the play card.

Did you know the first role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, was created in the 1970s and remains extremely popular today?

Did you know there’s an entire day devoted to talking like a pirate? It’s called, not too surprisingly, Talk Like A Pirate Day and occurs every September 19.

Here’s your fun card for May! Break a leg!

What’s your favorite play? Which activity on the fun card piques your interest the most? What’s your favorite way to play? Tell us in the comments!
