Thanks to a grant CAMALS, our regional system, received from University of California in Los Angeles’s Rare Book School, as part of a grant from the Mellon Foundation, we’re going to be hosting a zine competition and workshop this fall!
Interested? Read on to find out more about the zine station, the zine workshop, and the zine competition we’ll have.
For starters, you may be wondering what a zine is. A zine is a DIY self-published publication, usually intended for a small-circulation audience and devoted to a niche topic or creative expression. Zines were a popular means of connecting fans of subcultures, like science fiction and rock and punk music, in the days before the internet hosted chat rooms and blogs as convenient ways to interact with others with shared interests. They’ve had a 21st century resurgence, and our zine programming is a great way for adults of all ages to learn more about zines and make their own.
Our zine programming has 3 components–the zine station, the workshop, and the competition.
The zine station is set up now, and you can use it to create a zine, either for yourself or to create a submission to enter the competition to be included in the community zine.

If you’d like a little more guidance and information, then please sign up for our zine-making workshop on Monday, October 14, 4 pm. It is hosted by Zeke Pena, an award-winning author and illustrator.
Finally, the deadline to enter a submission for the Berryville community zine is Friday, October 25. You can submit anything from art to photos to writings to even recipes, all with the theme of resiliency. You can also submit up to 5 entries. If your submission is accepted, not only will it be published, but you’ll also receive $20 for each submission! You’ll need to turn in your submissions at the library with an entry form. You will also get your submissions back at the end and your own copy of the published zine when it is finished! The zine will also be available for all to view at the library.
Be sure to stop by the library or call us at 870-423-2323 if you have any questions.
Have you ever made a zine before? Have questions about zines? What’s your best life advice or favorite part about surviving and thriving in the Ozarks? Tell us in the comments!
