Community Book Read: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby is the book for the CAMALS Foundation’s second annual Community Book Read. The novel was first released on April 10, 1925, so it is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Read more to find out how you can get a free copy and participate in the fun.

Last year, the CAMALS Foundation started the Community Book Read. It selects one book for each of our 6 branches to read and discuss. Last year’s pick was Harper Lee’s classic To Kill A Mockingbird. This year, though, it will be all about the 20s. As in 1920s.

Thanks to this program, you can pick up a free copy of the book with a Reading Guide at the library. We have copies in both English and Spanish. Our discussion meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 9, at 6 pm at the Carroll Electric Community Room.

This is our adult book club time–2nd Tuesdays of the month at 6 pm, though we usually meet at the library and use books provided by the Arkansas Center for the Book. If you’ve been curious about the book club, this might be a good way to give it a try.

Also, if you haven’t read The Great Gatsby since high school and balk at the idea of revisiting it, I humbly suggest giving it another try. In my opinion, it is a text that resonates with readers much more once they have some life experience. I think we generally read it as assigned reading too young to really understand or appreciate it, which is all the more reason to attend on September 9!

At its heart, The Great Gatsby is a thematically rich and haunting book with a lot to say about love, the American Dream, and money that resonates just as much now as it did 100 years ago. It is also a vivid depiction of the Jazz Age from the time period and features the elegant, beautiful prose style that Fitzgerald was known for. Follow along with narrator Nick Carraway as he meets mysterious businessman Jay Gatsby and becomes drawn into Gatsby’s alluring and ultimately tragic world.

So, stop by the library to pick up your copy and join us on September 9, old sport!
