Exploring Our Digital Research Tools: November

We have a lot of fantastic digital resources, many of them courtesy of the Arkansas State Library. Because we’re a library in Arkansas, we have access to their Traveler Database. For this entire year, every month, we’re going to look at the different features available on these databases. For this month, we’re going to focus on the career/vocational and business resources.

Before we look at our databases like we usually do, we wanted to be sure you knew about Berryville Business Boost, our brand-new business resource page we just added to the library website this month.

If you go to our main library website–www.berryvillelibrary.org–look for the sidebar on the left.

Scroll down and select Business Resources.

That will take you to our Business Boost page.

We launched this resource in partnership with the Berryville Chamber of Commerce to give  entrepreneurs and small business owners a quick way to find links to quality resources that will help answer basic questions about how to start or grow a business in and around Berryville, Arkansas.

Each subpage–Plan, Start, Learn & Grow–includes resources from local, state, and national organizations on how to professionally plan and launch your business. This is a great resource for entrepreneurs, both those just starting out and those whose current business needs a boost!

To get to our Traveler database resources on business and careers, follow the directions in the first post of this series.

Once in the Arkansas Traveler database, click on Careers and Vocational.

You’ll see 2 database options. We covered Pronunciator, the language learning program, last month, so we’ll look at Career and Technical Education for this month.

Career and Technical Education is from Proquest and contains resources on careers ranging from the medical field to construction to accounting to photography.

I used HVAC for the examples, but you can find many careers here. I looked up everything from librarians to archaeologists to paleontologists on it.

For the first result, I got information from the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a particularly helpful resource for anyone planning their next career move, whether you’re a teenager unsure what to do after graduation or a well-seasoned professional looking for a career reset. You can select it and browse entries.

For our business research databases, to access that, at the top of the Traveler database page, click Business.

We have several from Proquest. Most of these are geared toward students or researchers, so they’re perfect if you’re in a business or economics class or doing research along those lines for any number of projects.

These databases include Accounting, Tax, and Business Collection; Asian and European Collection; Business Market Research Collection; and Canadian Business & Current Affairs Database.

ABI/INFORM has an extensive collection of full-text articles from top business publications and resources for both the United States and the world. It has Dun and Bradstreet reports, Wall Street Journal and Maclean’s articles, journals devoted to supply chain management and emerging markets, and more.

One Business includes articles from periodicals, as well as industry and company profiles and economic reports from numerous countries, American states, and Canadian provinces. It also includes free ebooks on everything from 3D printing to marketing your business.

If you would like more information on how to navigate Berryville Business Boost or any of the databases, stop by the library and ask!

What’s your favorite digital resource the library offers? Do you use the Traveler databases? Which of these databases are you most excited to try?
