This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It’s an important historical birthday for the United States, and we will be celebrating it all year-round with our new Free to Be series. With respect to Marlo Thomas, our Free to Be posts will be celebrating unique freedoms we enjoy as Americans. And this month, as we plan to open our new facility, we’re looking at how we’re free to play.
A couple of months ago, we talked about our American freedom of growth, which included both the colonial definition of “the pursuit of Happiness,” self-improvement, and the more modern viewpoint of that phrase.
Related to that freedom to grow is also freedom to play. As Americans, we’re free to read for self-improvement but we’re also free to read for fun. Ditto for other recreational pursuits.
At the Berryville Library, 250 years after our nation’s founding, we’re big believers in the freedom to play. Our library children’s area includes Legos and Imagination Playground blocks and hands-on activities are an integral aspect of our weekly Storytimes.
To that end, when we open our new building on Friday, August 7, play is also on the agenda. Amidst the ribbon cutting and other Grand Opening ceremonies, there will also be a scavenger hunt and bounce houses on hand.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. Throughout our opening week, there will be more fun and opportunities to play, including our first Storytime in the new library.
